Mark 8:36 KJV
Benjamin Ramm for BBC Culture, September 2017
Countless works of literature, art, theater and music draw on the theme of the Devil’s Bargain. The Faust story is a cautionary tale. It provokes us to look at ourselves and consider a sea of human foibles, pitfalls, desires, ethics, and corruption. Artists have led the way in reflection. In today’s political climate the legend is as relevant as ever. This will be an opportunity to see how works of art may help us understand world events. Opera Omaha’s upcoming production of Gounod’s Faust will a great final destination.
The 1st course of this menu will begin with a sampling of historical and contemporary versions of the Faustian themes. From Christopher Marlowe, Goethe and Thomas Mann to The Simpson’s, Rolling Stones and Queen, this story has been an extraordinary vehicle for artists to make us think. The 2nd course will bring an insider’s view from Kelley Rourke, Dramaturg and Translator of Opera Omaha’s Faust production by Lileana Blain-Cruz. Our menu concludes at the Orpheum Theater when Opera Omaha premiers its new production of Charles Gounod’s opera version of Faust on April 12.
